- IAMFI is a global membership organization dedicated to supporting commercially oriented microfinance investors.
- IAMFI was established in late 2007 by a diverse group of leading microfinance investors who believe that commercial capital can be a positive force in bringing financial services to the world’s unbanked poor.
- IAMFI is headquartered in New York City.
- IAMFI is led by an international Board of Directors of leading microfinance professionals representing all sectors of the industry, and managed by executive director Joan E. Trant and supporting staff.
- IAMFI’s mission is to address the needs of commercially oriented microfinance investors by:
- Providing credible, comprehensive and timely information on the microfinance industry from an independent perspective
- Conducting research on investment topics not currently being assessed
- Hosting events for members to discuss interests and concerns
- Facilitating dialogue among all sector actors
- Engaging with influencers to create an enabling environment for microfinance investing
- IAMFI offers programs and services to meet the specific needs of current and potential microfinance investors. Eligible members include: Limited Partners (institutions that invest in a microfinance investment vehicle (MIV) rather than directly through a microfinance institution), General Partners (public and private entities that manage a fund or MIV) and Service Providers (public and private entities that help advise, structure, consult or broker microfinance investments).

- Comprehensive, interactive information portal
- Proprietary research
- Educational and networking conferences and events
- Community to promote dialogue among investors and industry players
- Activities to foster transparent and timely information about microfinance
- IAMFI has received start-up capital from Founding Members DOEN Foundation of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, Gray Matters Capital of Georgia, USA, and Omidyar Network of California, USA.
- IAMFI has also received financial support from Founding Members Gray Ghost Ventures, Plainfield Asset Management LLC, Rockefeller Foundation, TIAA-CREF and Triodos Investment Management BV.
